Untitled Titled 2010 (2011) marks an important shift towards moving image and a more object-oriented and studiobased practice. Here, Mast manages to preserve the same intensive process as in her performances: she configures objects in different ways as if they were props or actors on stage. Mast photographed each step of this “unstable sculpture” in her studio and edited a stop-motion video to create a nonlinear narrative of “performing objects”. Working through her doubts as an artist, existential struggle eventually transforms into delight in the moment. Temporary materials such as chalk and painter’s tape capture the unpredictable and ephemeral playfulness that merge experimental studio practice with improvised theater rehearsal.
