Hold Your Tension, 2017, a performance in three parts
With: Emily Mast, Mikaal Sulaiman, Sarah McCarron & various members of the audience
Production: REDCAT, Los Angeles
For the group exhibition Chalk Circles, Mast presented a new performance in collaboration with Mikaal Sulaiman. Mast used the duration of the exhibition to develop a performance with Mikaal, a former actor trained in Lecoq technique, in which he recounted and performed his own personal history with performance—retrospectively and subjectively considering his career in the institution of theater. Three iterations of the piece were presented: one considering Mikaal’s relationship to theater, one that presented examples of, rather than described, Lecoq technique and one that invited the audience to participate themselves.
