Inspired by a mermaid theme park and 18-seat mermaid theater that opened in Weeki Wachee, Florida in 1947, as well as documentation of “real mermaid sightings”, Mermaid Room is a tarp dance for three people: Jason Black, Ahrum Hong and Erin Schneider. Their performance is tempered by a cat-like attraction to crinkly, shiny plastic and the movements of concealing and revealing, and features songs by Peggy Lee. A solo iteration of this work, titled understudy, premiered at the Electric Lodge in January, 2019.
